What is a high school track and field team to use when they do not have a baton for a 4 x 100 relay? A high jump bar, of course. Why not?

The Fairfax High School relay team decided to have a little fun with their 4 x 100 relay for their Senior Night. So the team decided to go a very non-traditional route and pick up a high jump bar (not a pole, technically), to run the relay. To add a couple of extra laughs to the situation, the Fairfax girls relay team came from behind to win the race!

Here is how the decision came about according to one of the members of the team.

“It was actually Senior Night and we wanted to do something fun and just have a blast that night,” said Te’Ona Witherspoon, a senior on the Fairfax track team. “And we were just like, ‘What’s something different that other teams don’t really do?’ And we were like, ‘Let’s run a 4×1 with a pole.’

“It was kind of a collective [decision]. Me and my friend Nyah, she was the second leg, and we’re kind of the jokesters on the team. We both kind of came up with the idea to have some fun.”

To ensure the team did not interfere with any of the other racers, the Fairfax girls took the outside lane to make sure nobody would cross their path. They had never actually practiced handing off anything larger than a traditional baton, so that was a wise move.
