Gatorade frozen in Calgary during a CFL game.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers-Calgary Stampeders Canadian Football League game Saturday, the regular-season finale for both teams, was played in quite the cold temperatures. The game kicked off at 5 p.m. local (Mountain) at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium, with temperatures hitting around 18 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 Celsius) around then. And that led to a lot of discussions of the cold on the broadcast, including a shot of frozen Gatorade cups on a sideline table:

Yeah, that’s not your usual look at sideline Gatorade. And it’s likely there are colder CFL games ahead; the league has the divisional semifinals next Sunday, then the division finals, and then the 108th Grey Cup in Hamilton on Dec. 12 (two weeks later than usual thanks to the late start to this season over COVID-19 concerns). So there’s the potential for a lot of weather-impacted games.

But those can certainly be entertaining, as this one was; there wasn’t much offense for much of the game, but Calgary pulled off a comeback from a 12-0 deficit to win 13-12, with 10 of those points coming in the final two minutes (off a touchdown, a defensive stand that produced two-and-out, and then a field goal). We’ll see if there’s more frozen Gatorade ahead.
