Everybody could use a heartwarming story to read, and here is a great one to soothe some frayed nerves.

Five-year-old Ari Schultz was diagnosed with critical aortic stenosis and evolving hypoplastic left heart syndrome when he was in the womb, which even not knowing exactly what those two diseases are, they sound fairly awful. He has been waiting for a new heart ever since he was born, and has been living at the Boston Children’s Hospital while waiting for a transplant.

Nine days ago, Ari’s parents Mike and Erica, got the news they had been waiting for and told their son.

Ari is also a huge Red Sox fan, so after he’s told about the heart transplant, his parents also tell him he might be able to go to a Red Sox game this season, which would be awesome.

But back to the transplant, this is what Ari’s parents posted on March 3, the day of the surgery:

“Ari’s new heart began beating in his chest spontaneously at 11:32 p.m. on Friday, March 3,” Mike posted.

“As of now, he’s stable in the cardiac intensive care unit,” his parents wrote. “He is deeply sedated and has a breathing tube in. He looks like he’s resting comfortably.”

“We are forever thankful for the donor and donor families sacrifice, and will think about them every day for the rest of our lives,” they wrote. “Please, #DonateLife.”

The Schultz family hopes Ari can come home in a few months, and though he faces a lifetime of medication to guard against his body rejecting his new heart, a compromised immune system and a very strict diet, considering all he’s overcome in his short life until now, that seems like a challenge Ari can face.

And while you’re at it, Red Sox, make sure to get Ari out to Fenway this season when he’s able to.

A GoFundMe campaign has been created to raise money for Ari’s medical bills. You can donate here.
