Aaron Boone is facing many tough questions these days as the New York Yankees continue to stumble, so he might have a short fuse. It showed Tuesday.

During Boone’s weekly appearance on the “Talkin’ Yanks” podcast, co-host Jake Storiale brought up a decision the Yankees manager made in a recent 3-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox. New York led 2-1 in the eighth, but after the Red Sox put runners on second and third with one out, Boone had the infield at normal depth, rather than playing in to attempt to prevent a run. A Red Sox groundout tied the game.

When Storiale questioned the decision, Boone vehemently disagreed.

“I don’t even think that one is debatable … I disagree not even a little bit,” Boone said.

Boone said he made the decision knowing the Yankees had two more at-bats.

“But the offense is having an historically bad month,” Storiale said.

“OK,” Boone said, his voice rising. “If we give up a hit, we’re down.”

Boone told Storiale he should think more about how the decision made sense at the time, but the podcaster said he had thought about it, and it still didn’t make sense.

“When you manage the team, you can … you can bring them in in that situation,” Boone said.

It’s easy to see why Boone is frustrated. The Yankees entered the day 39-33, team leader Aaron Judge is sidelined by an injury with no set return date, slugger Giancarlo Stanton is MIA, and the pitching staff has been devastated by injuries.

The last thing Boone probably wants to do on a game day is argue with a podcaster. Still, MLB fans thought he could have done a better job keeping his temper in check.
