Albert Pujols recently reunited with the St. Louis Cardinals. On Monday, the MLB superstar in the final days of his legendary career has announced that he is filing for divorce from his wife of 22 years just days after she underwent successful surgery on a brain tumor.

“I’ve been asked a lot of questions over the past few days regarding what’s been going on at home and sadly, after 22 years of marriage, I have made the decision to file for divorce from my wife, Deidre,” Pujols said in a statement. “I realize this is not the most opportune time with Opening Day approaching and other family events that have recently taken place. These situations are never easy and isn’t something that just happened overnight.”

Albert and Deidre had been married since 2000 and have five children together, including a daughter from Deidre’s previous relationship.

The timing of the announcement surely raised some eyebrows considering Deidre Pujols had just undergone surgery to remove a brain tumor that was discovered in October. Albert has been with the Cardinals in spring training this week while that surgery occurred in California.

Of course, it’s easy to draw conclusions from the outside in situations like this but, as Pujols said in his statement, this likely isn’t a decision that “just happened overnight.”

Pujols signed a one-year deal to return to the Cardinals this season after spending last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
