The Kansas City Royals got the last laugh against the New York Mets in last season’s World Series, but that apparently is not enough for the Royals. According to a report from Newsday, the World Series champions may take it upon themselves to deliver another message to the Mets in the 2016 season opener Sunday night in Kansas City.

The Royals want to get revenge on Mets starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard, who fired a fastball over the head of Alcides Escobar on the very first pitch of Game 3. It was the only game won by the Mets, with the Royals taking the series 4-1. Escobar struck out on the next three pitches of the game in New York.

But these are the Royals, and they are not a bunch to simply forgive and move on. They hold grudges, so the idea that the Royals may look to respond months later, despite already having won two more games to capture the World Series, is not exactly a shock. Not when the Royals have developed the reputation they have over the past couple of seasons.

Will anything truly come out of this? Maybe, but probably not. The Royals are already doing their best to rub in the faces of the Mets by spreading out their World Series celebration over the course of the season-opening series.

But if Syndergaard starts either of the games at Kauffman Stadium — and right now, it appears he’ll start the second of those games, with Matt Harvey getting the opening day nod — that could lead to some fireworks rarely seen in the first or second game of the season. Just imagine if Syndergaard had to bat, like he would if the game was played at the Mets’ home park of Citi Field. Alas, this may be just talk with the teams playing under American League rules.
