Houston Astros prospect Danry Vasquez was arrested on a warrant earlier this month on suspicion of assault family violence. A day after video footage was reviewed by the Corpus Christi Hooks of a Hooks player being shown slapping a woman inside a Whataburger Field stairwell, the minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros contacted the police to handle the situation as needed.

As a result of the legal issue hovering over Vasquez, the Hooks announced Vasquez had been placed on administrative leave without pay, a fairly routine response when a player gets into this sort of legal issue. This will allow the legal process to play out before any further action from the Astros and/or Hooks is taken. The teams are cooperating with police.

“We take this allegation very seriously, and have taken swift response as we do not condone violence in our organization,” a statement from the Astros read. “The Astros are disappointed that this allegation is attached to a member of our organization.”

The video footage was reviewed by the minor league club on August 2, when an employee of the team claimed Vasquez threatened him. It was while reviewing the video footage of that allegation the team discovered footage of Vasquez pulling his girlfriend by the arm and hitting her in the face twice, according to information on a police affidavit. The woman fell down stairs in the baseball stadium after the first strike. Vasquez left after hitting her a second time only to return and have what has been described as “a heated conversation” with the employee filing the complaint with the team.

Vasquez is currently free on $10,000 bail, according to the Associated Press.

Let’s review a couple important rules to live by, in light of this news. First, do not hit anybody. Second, especially do not hit a woman. Third, repeat the first and second rule whenever you have a question about the situation.

By early accounts, it appears the Astros and Hooks have responded to this situation accordingly and responsibly. A complaint was made, evidence was reviewed and promptly handed over to the authorities. That is how it should be done, but the unfortunate reality is it has to be done at all.
