A play in the first inning of Saturday night’s Blue Jays-Orioles game summarizes the kind of baseball being played by the Blue Jays and Orioles this season.

Baltimore’s Trey Mancini hit a routine flyball to shallow right field, and Toronto right fielder Derek Fisher appeared to have it all under control. Instead, Fisher whiffed on the ball, and got hit in the face.

In case whiffing on a routine play isn’t embarrassing enough, getting drilled on the face will cement it.

Fisher had to leave the game with what has initially been diagnosed as a facial contusion.

Fisher was just acquired by the Blue Jays from the Houston Astros prior to Wednesday’s trade deadline, in exchange for pitchers Aaron Sanchez and Joe Biagini. And Sanchez (six innings) and Biagini (one inning) threw seven no-hit innings in a combined no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night. So, this deal isn’t off to the best start for Toronto.
