Julio Mendez is a 20-year-old infield prospect for the Milwaukee Brewers, playing for the organization’s Rookie league affiliate in Arizona. Last night, he was hit in the chest by a pitch, suffering what the team has called a “cardiac event”.

That’s just about as scary as it gets. The Brewers released an update on his condition today:

Last night, Julio Mendez, a member of the Arizona (R) Brewers affiliate, suffered a cardiac event after being hit by a pitch in a game played in Tempe, Arizona. After receiving treatment on the field, he was taken to a local hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.

“All of our thoughts and prayers are with Julio and his family,” said Milwaukee Brewers General Manager David Stearns. “We will provide updates as soon as we know more.”

Mendez has been with the Brewers organization since 2004.

That’s awful. Thanks to the quick actions of the medical staffs at the stadium, though, he’s in stable condition; hopefully Mendez makes a full and complete recovery as quickly as possible.
