The New York Yankees’ Chase Headley got drilled in the groin by an 88-mph pitch from Minnesota Twins reliever Dillon Gee during the fifth inning on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

That’s certainly a painful way to earn a free base, especially if you’re not wearing a cup. And given that Headley was the designated hitter in this game, there’s a very good chance he wasn’t wearing a cup. He may have told himself that the odds of this sort of thing happening as a hitter-only were tiny, and it’s not worth dealing with the annoyance of a cup. And if so, he’s definitely regretting that decision now.
