Nothing says victory like dumping a massive amount of colorant into a vital waterway like the Chicago River.

That’s why Chicago is reportedly going to dye the Chicago River blue if the Cubs manage to win the World Series for the first time since 1908. (I’m contractually obligated to mention that they haven’t won since 1908.)

The city already dyes the river green for St. Patrick’s Day, of course, so this isn’t much more of a stretch.

The Chicago Tribune’s Michael Sneed has the details:

Sneed is told Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office is planning to dye the Chicago River BLUE if the Cubs win the World Series.

It will follow in the Chicago tradition to dye the river green on St. Patrick’s Day.

In addition, Sneed has learned the city is planning a ticker-tape perhaps, next Thursday, if the Cubs clinch the World Series title against the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday in Ohio.

That part is still fluid.

The Trib really missed a great chance at a “river dye/situation is fluid” pun there. Rest assured, I wouldn’t miss that opportunity.

One wonders if they considered dying it black in 2005 when the White Sox won, but then a river full of black water is probably not the prettiest thing in the world. And, presumably, would be pretty bad for any fish still living there.

The Cubs, of course, are going to need to overcome a 2-1 deficit in the World Series to make this happen, but if they do, well then:

A river runs blue it.

There’s the pun.
