Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon was up to his wacky ways on Sunday night at Wrigley Field, and put pitcher Travis Wood in left field in the seventh inning of the team’s game against the Seattle Mariners. Wood had entered the game the previous inning as a relief pitcher, and did a great job getting the Cubs out of a bases loaded jam.

Well, wouldn’t you know it, the second batter that came to the plate in the seventh hit a rocket to deep left field, and Wood looked like a natural backing into the Wrigley bricks and ivy to make a really nice grab. This is pretty amazing, and even Wood couldn’t help but laugh after the play:

UPDATE: Joe Maddon wasn’t done with this one, as Travis Wood came back in to pitch to a batter in the top of the eighth, and picked a runner off to end the inning.

UPDATE II: This game didn’t stop being totally nuts.
