Derek Jeter is one of the best to ever play baseball and he has an upcoming ESPN docuseries set to premiere on July 18. It’s a seven-part series so they will be delving deep into the life and career of the New York Yankees shortstop.
One thing Jeter reportedly responded to in the docuseries is the infamous “gift basket” rumor that the New York Post peddled back in 2011. In that story, Jeter was accused of giving a gift basket that consisted of autographed memorabilia to women he had a one-night stand with.
For the last decade, Jeter didn’t respond to the story or the rumor but according to The Daily Beast, he finally talked about the rumor on The Captain. Jeter denied that anything like that ever happened and he was dumbfounded that people actually believed the story.
“Yeah, I read the article. Yeah, of course,” says Jeter. “You know, you see it, and then it’s like, how the f*** did people come up with this? You know, basically, that’s it. And who would believe this s***? And you believed it!”
That didn’t stop just with the article. Jeter recalled an instance where someone at Starbucks told him that he was inspired to give out gift baskets of his own. Something Jeter didn’t take too kindly.
“I remember being at a Starbucks one time and there’s some random guy behind me and he says, ‘Hey, I just want to let you know that I’m giving out gift baskets because you did.’ And I turned around and said, ‘You’re a f*****’ idiot!’ and the look on his face… like, did he think I was gonna say, ‘Yeah, good job, man!’”
The Captain will premiere after the Home Run Derby on ESPN Monday, July 18.
