With the Washington Nationals scoring one run in each of their past three games, it was predictable that manager Dusty Baker would be asked about his team’s offensive struggles. However, Baker’s response was anything but predictable.
The Nationals’ boss managed to talk about this topic at length, thanks to an anecdote from his days at school. While the answer is long and ends up getting away from the point of the question, Baker actually made some sense in the end.

The analogy makes sense. If Washington is able to break out of its slump and start scoring runs, we will all forget about previous offensive deficiencies. However, Baker doesn’t really make that connection in his answer. He lays out the analogy in a long-winded answer and then finishes his quote with “Same thing applies in baseball.”
While Baker’s ability to turn a question about hitting into a tale about his shortcomings in school is surprising, Baker has said plenty of strange things to the media in the past.
Just in his one year in Washington, Baker spent part of Spring Training calling Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper “Royce,” and gave media members a set of well-put together thoughts on domestic violence and race at the Winter Meetings.
Baker’s words might not always make sense, but they do keep us on our toes. And in the day of cliches and manufactured quotes, it’s all we can ask for.
