Edwin Díaz has been absent from the New York Mets all season after the star closer’s horrible injury in the World Baseball Classic. Díaz tore the patellar tendon in his leg, which appeared to rule the Met closer out for the entire 2023 MLB season. But if you ask him, a return might be closer than you think.
Ken Rosenthal published an article about the Díazes: Edwin and his brother Alexis, who also starred for Puerto Rico and has put up great numbers with the Cincinnati Reds this season. In it, Rosenthal and Edwin revealed that he’s been “increasingly upbeat” in messages sent to his brother. This prompted Ken to ponder if that meant that he could return to the Mets this season.
“If everything keeps going how it’s going, we’ve got a chance to pitch,” Edwin said to Rosenthal via The Athletic.
Díaz figured to miss all of the 2023 MLB season after the devastating injury. A track to put him back on the field for the Mets was all but paved after his initial prognosis. But it certainly sounds like Edwin Díaz wants to get back, and is progressing at the right pace.
A shocking return like this wouldn’t be unprecedented. Kyle Schwarber famously returned from a horrible injury suffered at the beginning of the season in the 2016 World Series for the eventual champion Chicago Cubs.
