One week after he sent the Cleveland Guardians to the American League Division Series, Oscar González was at it again. This time, it was the New York Yankees on the wrong end of Gonzalez’s heroics.

The Yankees led the Guardians 5-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. When Luke Maile flew out to lead the inning off, things looked really good for New York. But Myles Straw and Steven Kwan came through with back-to-back hits. Amed Rosario followed with a single that drove Straw home. José Ramírez then came through with an infield single, putting Kwan at third base as the tying run and Rosario at second as the winning run. That set the stage for González.

New York’s Clarke Schmidt got ahead of González. But González got his bat on a 1-2 pitch and set it back up the middle, past Clarke and into centerfield. Kwan cruised home to score the tying run and Rosario sprinted in behind him, crossing the plate well ahead of Harrison Bader’s throw.

That capped off a game that, while maybe not quite as wild as the one played by the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners, was plenty wild. Cleveland opened up a 2-0 lead after two innings. But the New York scored two in the third to tie it and two more in the fifth to take the lead. The Guardians scored one in the sixth but the Yankees immediately got that back in the seventh. That set the stage for Cleveland’s dramatic ninth inning.

The Guardians themselves were quick to note how wild the game was.

They were not alone.

Game 4 will be played on Sunday in Cleveland. If necessary, the series will return to New York for a winner-take-all Game 5. The Astros await the winner.
