After designating him for an assignment earlier this month amid domestic abuse allegations, the New York Mets — in a bit of a shocking move — are bringing Khalil Lee to major-league spring training.

Tim Healey of Newsday was the first to report the news.

“Lee is being investigated by MLB for allegedly assaulting a former girlfriend,” Healey wrote in a tweet. “The Mets designated him for assignment recently, but he cleared waivers and remains with the organization.”

The Mets designated Lee for an assignment just five days after a lawsuit against the 24-year-old was filed. The lawsuit, filed by Lee’s ex-girlfriend, alleged that the Mets outfielder kicked, choked and pulled her hair during an argument they had in Syracuse last May. This led to Lee’s ex-girlfriend going to the authorities the following day and an arrest warrant was issued for Lee on Aug. 10, 2022, citing criminal obstruction of breath.

At the time of the alleged incident, Lee was with the Mets Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse.

The Mets organization issued a statement earlier this month on the accusations:

“The Mets immediately notified MLB upon becoming aware of the allegations. We will fully comply with MLB’s policy and cannot comment until the completion of the league’s investigative process.”

Lee made his major league debut with the Mets in 2021.
