Manny Machado

Baltimore Orioles’ third baseman Manny Machado has made plenty of dazzling plays in the field over the years, and he came up with a really impressive one for the Dominican Republic Thursday in the World Baseball Classic.

With the Dominican team up 1-0 on Venezuela in the top of the sixth inning, Miguel Cabrera hit a hard ground ball down the third-base line. Machado managed to get all the way over into foul territory, make a backhand grab for the ball, and then quickly threw across his body. The throw was a little off the bag, but close enough that Carlos Santana was able to grab it and still tag first before Cabrera got there. Here’s the clip:

This was a great play, and a crucial one for the Dominican team to retain their lead. This marked the second out of the sixth, and they were still leading 1-0 in the seventh. We’ll see if they can hang on for the win or not, but in a low-scoring game like this, every out is crucial. Machado made an amazing play to get this one, yet more proof of what he can do in the field. He’s one player it’s always worth keeping an eye on.
