On Thursday, the Seattle Mariners pulled off the biggest move of the 2025 season to date on Thursday, agreeing to a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks to bring in a former All-Star in the midst of another excellent season.
Sitting at 50-53 on the season, the Diamondbacks were essentially forced to part ways with any valuable pieces on their roster that weren’t apart of their long-term plans. This includes former All-Star first baseman Josh Naylor, who was on a one-year deal with the Diamondbacks.
According to MLB insider Jeff Passan, the Mariners acquired Naylor in a deal with the Diamondbacks for a pair of prospects, Left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia and right-handed pitcher Ashton Izzi.
Left-hander Brandyn Garcia and right-hander Ashton Izzi are headed back to the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Seattle Mariners for first baseman Josh Naylor, sources tell ESPN. That’s the full trade.
And so begins deadline season. Buckle up.

The return wasn’t a bad one by any means for the Diamondbacks, who aren’t in a position to win at the moment, as Garcia and Izzi are both top-15 prospects in the Mariners organization.
But with that being said, someone like Naylor, who is hitting for a .292 batting average and a .360 on-base percentage on the year, is certainly an addition that could greatly help the Mariners as they push for a playoff spot in the American League. So at least on paper, Naylor could be one of the most impactful players added at the trade deadline this season.
