Giancarlo Stanton is going to cost the Miami Marlins $308.5 million in future salary earnings. Stanton is also going to cost the Marlins at the box office thanks to his record-setting Home Run Derby performance Monday night in San Diego.

The Marlins sent out a ticket offer to Marlins fans who previously purchased tickets with a fun little ticket promotion tied to Stanton’s performance in the Home Run Derby. The team was prepared to offer a discount of one percent off a ticket price for each home run hit by Stanton. For example, had Stanton hit 15 home runs, Marlins fans would get 15 percent off their tickets. If he hit 25 home runs, fans could save 25 percent off future ticket purchases.

Stanton hit 61 home runs Monday night, setting a new HR Derby record on his way to a dominating victory. That means the Marlins will be forced to honor a ticket promotion of 61 percent off ticket sales.* Hope they got some insurance on that promotion.

There is no word on whether or not there is a limit on how many tickets can be purchased at this steep discount, but with the Marlins hanging around in the National League East, this could be just the ticket to help boost attendance for some key division games in the second half of the season.

* UPDATE: Welllllll, actually it turns out the Marlins protected themselves from this sort of ticket fiasco already. Darren Rovell reports the Marlins actually capped the percentage off promo at 25 percent off. The deal will be good for any of 35 future home games.
