Max Scherzer

Over the last few seasons, Major League Baseball has begun cracking down on foreign substances used by pitchers during games. And during Wednesday afternoon’s game between the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mets ace Max Scherzer was ejected by umpire Phil Cuzzi after a foreign substance check.

When umpire Phil Cuzzi went to perform a foreign substance check on Max Scherzer during the middle of the third inning, he put his hand inside Scherzer’s glove and appeared to check it for a foreign substance. Cuzzi did not appear to be satisfied with what he found, and he sent Scherzer back to the dugout to get another glove, much to Scherzer’s displeasure.

When Scherzer returned from the dugout, Cuzzi and the umpiring crew once again checked Scherzer’s glove, and they once again were not satisfied by what they felt inside the glove. As a result of the foreign substance check and the encounter on the field, Scherzer was ejected from the game.

It’s not clear what exactly Cuzzi and the umpiring crew found inside Scherzer’s glove or why exactly he was ejected from the game, but he did not get the chance to finish his outing against the Dodgers.
