When the Texas Rangers begin the 2024 Major League Baseball season after winning the 2023 World Series, they’ll be doing it without their ace pitcher as the team announced that the three-time Cy Young winner will be out until the middle of the season after undergoing back surgery.
The team announced on Friday that Max Scherzer underwent surgery for a herniated disk on Thursday. Scherzer was removed from the Texas Rangers roster during the World Series due to back discomfort, and he said that when returned to his offseason home in Florida, the pain worsened, resulting in the diagnosis and the surgery.
“After several conservative treatments and consulting with multiple specialists, I made the decision to have the recommended surgery,” Scherzer said according to ESPN. “Getting this procedure done now will give me the best chance to pitch as much as possible for the Rangers in 2024. I look forward to putting in the rehab work and getting back on the mound next summer.”
The Rangers were already going to be without starting pitchers Scherzer joins Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle for the first chunk of the season as both pitchers are recovering from Tommy John surgery and are expected to return in the middle of the season around the same time as Scherzer.
