It’s easy for anyone to see that this season is not exactly going the way the New York Mets had hoped. The team is currently eight games shy of a .500 record and 17 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East division race. The Mets expected to be legitimate contenders this season, but instead, there’s now a real discussion about potentially trading away an ace pitcher – and we aren’t even at the All-Star break yet.
This week, New York Mets ace Max Scherzer fielded a question about the possibility of being traded. The Mets starter was asked if he would consider waiving his no-trade clause to allow the team to deal him to another team before the trade deadline.
While Scherzer didn’t exactly rule it out, he also made it clear that he’s not going to be the one to initiate those conversations – that would be on New York Mets team owner Steve Cohen.
“It’s pointless to even talk about it,” Scherzer said according to SNY. “Go ask Steve. If Steve says it’s so, then let’s talk about it. Until then, it’s pointless to even talk about or think about.”
It’s pretty brutal news for the Mets that this is even a discussion in June in the first place, and the MLB world had plenty to say about it.
Steve is going to call Max into his office and ask him to go play for the Orioles for a few months, then waive his option and come back to the Mets for two more years at $90 million. https://t.co/esw3rX0EeF

Idk why the media is trying to make a thing out of this. Scherzer is the ultimate competitor. As long as he's on the Mets he'll give us everything we have but yeah if a contender wants him I'm sure he'd be open to a trade. https://t.co/ZjcFYNJ4CV

Scherzer is a part of the issue and is a big reason we lost the division but yeah we need to deal him and just take the loss https://t.co/q5hAdsIqio

Good for Max. Enough of this talk of how the Mets need to turn their season around and that needs to be their focus and then asking questions like this or acting like the season is over.
And I’m sure Martino will write an article tomorrow talking about how (if they win tonight)… https://t.co/jvS88oPQeF

Unless the Mets plan on not trying to be good next year, they need Scherzer and Verlander on this team

So in other words, if he brings it up I’m down for a trade

As for Cohen’s thoughts on the situation, he said he didn’t want to “even broach that topic” of trading either Scherzer or Justin Verlander.
