The New York Mets just made headlines on Tuesday afternoon. Despite massive expectations, the team has struggled mightily this season, so a recalibration is necessary. New York made a big move to hire David Stearns to their front office.

Stearns joins the team’s front office as its next President of Baseball Operations. ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reported the news.

“The New York Mets are hiring David Stearns as president of baseball operations, sources familiar with the situation tell ESPN.

“A monumental addition to the organization. Stearns, 38, will take over officially once the regular season is over. The new era of the Mets begins soon,” Passan said.

Stearns rejoins the Mets after he began his MLB front office career with the team out of Harvard. He later would hold job titles with the MLB Central Office, the Cleveland Indians, the Houston Astros, and then eventually the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers hired Stearns in 2015 after his stint with the Astros, and he held the job there ever since.

Stearns oversaw success in Milwaukee. The Brew Crew made four consecutive playoff appearances from 2018-2021. The Brewers made it to the 2018 NLCS but ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a thrilling series.

By bringing Stearns in, the Mets hope for similar bouts of success after a disappointing 2023 season.

The MLB world had plenty to say after the announcement was made.
