The Miami Marlins made news Tuesday morning when Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reported that the team would be designating shortstop Tim Anderson for assignment.

The 31-year-old two-time All-Star signed a one-year deal with Miami in the offseason after spending the first seven seasons of his career with the Chicago White Sox.

The Marlins now have ten days to trade or release Anderson, who appeared in 65 games for Miami. Anderson’s short time with the Marlins didn’t lead to many highlights, but the 2020 Silver Slugger hit a walk-off single in the tenth inning of Miami’s 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on June 21.

Anderson struggled to get anything going at the plate during his time in Miami, hitting just .214 with zero home runs. His -1.2 WAR (Wins Above Replacement) was last among shortstops with at least 200 plate appearances this season and fifth-worst in MLB overall among players with 200 plate appearances.

The Marlins have yet to announce a corresponding move to fill Anderson’s roster spot. Tuesday’s news likely means more playing time for utility infielder Vidal Bruján, who has appeared in 21 games at shortstop for the team this season after being traded to the Marlins from the Tampa Bay Rays over the offseason.

Social media had a lot to say about the Marlins moving on from Anderson.
