The Miami Marlins have designated two-time All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson for assignment after just 65 games with the team.

Craig Mish of the Miami Herald had the news about the 31-year-old shortstop first on Tuesday morning.

In his 65 games with the Marlins this season, Anderson hit .214 with 50 hits and nine RBIs. He did not hit a home run in his time with Miami, who will not have ten days to trade or release Anderson.

Initially drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft, Anderson worked his way up through Chicago’s farm system and joined the major league club in June of 2016. He hit .283 in 99 games and finished seventh in the American League Rookie of the Year voting despite less playing time than the other candidates.

Anderson’s batting average went down in his next two seasons, but his power numbers rose. He hit 37 combined home runs in the two years before putting everything together in 2019. Anderson hit .335 in 2019, becoming the first White Sox to win the American League batting title since Frank Thomas in 1997.

His two career All-Star appearances came in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, but by the end of 2023, his final season with the White Sox, he had started to struggle again, hitting just .245 with one home run in 123 games.

Anderson’s one-year deal with the Marlins was seen as a low-risk contract for Miami, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out for the player or team.
