Last week, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced plans to honor an LGBTQ+ group called The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – a group that uses drag and Catholic imagery to address social and gender issues. The decision from the team has caused plenty of backlash, and now that backlash includes former Vice President Mike Pence.
On Thursday afternoon, Mike Pence released a statement on Twitter condemning the decision to honor The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. He said that honoring the group was “deeply offensive” and suggested that the MLB should apologize to Catholics for the Dodgers’ decision.
“Having been raised in a Catholic family, the Dodgers decision to invite the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a hateful group that blatantly mocks Catholicism, to their event next month is deeply offensive,” Pence said in a tweet. “Last summer the MLB moved their All-Star Game out of Georgia over a lie about voter ID and now they are apologizing and welcoming anti-Catholic bigots back to Dodger Stadium with open arms.”

“The MLB should not be apologizing to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, they should be apologizing to Catholics across America. America’s pastime should respect the faith of every American no matter what,” Pence’s tweet continued.
It’s a clear message from Pence, and people were not too happy with the former vice president for his comments.
A good place to start this discussion would be with Mike Pence's staggering failure regarding an HIV outbreak when he was governor. https://t.co/MdwrsXk7DA https://t.co/5COeaLLhlI

Actually what's deeply offensive and far more damaging are the decades of hate the Catholic Church has directed at the LGBTQ community. The Sisters rose out of the Church's refusal to minister to gay AIDS patients in the 80s and 90s. Looking forward to the apology, Mr. Pence. https://t.co/OpyNAeB9qG

Mr. Pence,
Having been raised in a family of decent people, the Catholic church's decision to devalue the lives of LGBTQ people, making it harder for them to be themselves for fear of being shunned by their family & congregation in the name of religion, is deeply offensive. https://t.co/twsXE93FjZ

I was raised Catholic too and instead of going on on about a non issue, maybe he should keep this same energy about these out of control priest who really are hurting children. https://t.co/RjLP5jy0WF

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Major League Baseball did not immediately respond to the former Vice President.
