While Mike Trout has been considered the best player in baseball for the last decade, the Los Angeles Angels star has also been dealing with injuries more and more in recent seasons. So when he left Sunday’s game after getting hit in the hand during an at-bat, it was cause for concern amongst many Angels fans and the rest of the Major League Baseball world.
With the count 1-2 in the top of the fifth, Trout was hitting for the Angels when he took an 81 mph slider from Texas Rangers pitcher Spencer Patton on the left hand, causing him some very clear pain and discomfort.

After consulting with his coaches and trainers, Trout would leave the game.
Mike Trout is hit by a pitch in his hand and he appears to be in considerable pain. He is looked at by trainers. This is not at all what you want to see.

Trout is coming off a season in which he played 36 games due to a calf strain. Given the excitement to see him get back on track and back to putting up monster numbers, the play has scared a lot of Angels fans and MLB folks who are worried this could be another injury to keep him out of action for a long period of time. At least for the moment, we don’t know if that’s the case.

It’s still very early in the season but the Angels are going to have a hard time as it is keeping pace with the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics, let alone if they have to try to do it without Trout.
The 30-year-old is off to a reliably strong start so far this year, batting .267/.405/.567 with two home runs, three doubles, and three RBIs in nine games. Hopefully, he’ll be able to continue adding to that very soon.
UPDATE: The very good news is that X-rays came back negative and Trout remains day-to-day at the moment.
