Major League Baseball has been undergoing a series of changes designed to make the game more exciting and increase its appeal to the casual fan. These changes have included larger bases, a pitch clock, and the ban of the “shift.”

However, the game is still dominated by men, with women in the United States tending to focus more on softball. That may start to change soon, as the league is becoming more inclusive. On Tuesday, major news broke about how the game is going to feature a woman on the field for the first time in league history.

“Jen Pawol will become the first female umpire ever to work a regular season Major League game during this weekend’s Marlins-Braves series in Atlanta. Pawol, a Minor League Umpire since 2016, is one of 17 current Triple-A call-up umpires eligible to substitute in Major League games. She will work the bases in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader,” the league reported on its official Twitter account.

Fans reacted to the news on social media.

“She can’t be any worse than half the umpires currently in the majors,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“The vast majority of umpires in MLB are a complete joke so there’s no way she could even be much worse,” someone else added.

“Marks a major milestone for MLB’s inclusivity,” wrote another fan.

It’s great to see the sport of baseball becoming more inclusive. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before the first woman is on the field as a player.
