A very scary scene on Thursday night in Anaheim, as home plate umpire Paul Emmel was hit in the head by a bat, and suffered a severe head wound.
Jefry Marte was batting for the Angels with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and lost his bat on the follow through of his swing. The bat then hit Emmel in the head.
Oh my, bat slips out of Jefry Marte’s hands, hits HP umpire Paul Emmel in head in B9. Emmel bleeding badly. #Angels #Athletics

That head wound did not look good at all, but at least Emmel was able to walk off under his own power. Let’s hope he’ll be okay.
UPDATE: Emmel will receive stitches, but appears to be okay.
