The Rockies have been one of this year’s “out of nowhere” teams, the kind of team that was projected to maybe be decent (though some considered them a sleeper) that comes out hot and forces their way into the playoff race.

That the rest of the National League has been generally bad has been a big help for them as well. That’s enabled them to weather a recent slide, as Colorado had lost 7 straight games heading into Wednesday’s tilt in San Francisco.

One thing that hasn’t regressed, though, is Nolan Arenado’s defensive prowess. He offered up yet another example on Wednesday, with what will surely end up being a contender for play of the season:

Okay, that’s ridiculous, even though a pitcher was running. The defensive side of his game is indisputable. He’s the best defensive third baseman in baseball, and one of the best we’ve seen in a long time. If it weren’t for Kris Bryant, Arenado would be a lock starter in the All Star game for years to come. (As it is, he still might be, at least this season.)

The Rockies, though, lost, suffering a sweep at the hands of the lowly Giants. They’re still a solid bet to make the postseason, at least the Wild Card game, and the fans in Denver might actually have something to do while they wait for the Broncos season to start again.
