Cedric Mullins did not start for the Baltimore Orioles in Sunday’s game against the Seattle Mariners. But he did play. And it’s hard to imagine a player ever doing more to help his team win a game.
Baltimore was nursing a 3-2 lead with one out in the ninth inning. Seattle’s Ty France launched a ball to center field for what appeared to be a game-tying home run. Mullins had other ideas, though.
He tracked the ball down, then perfectly timed his leap, going over the wall to rob France of a home run.
Great weekend for Kevin Brown to return to the Orioles broadcast booth. First, this great call of Cedric Mullins' amazing home run saving catch in the Bottom of the 9th in Seattle. pic.twitter.com/cXTWWIJ4N1

That play loomed especially large when the next hitter, Dominic Canzone, launched a ball well out of anyone’s reach for a home run. Thanks to Mullins’ catch, Canzone’s blast only tied the game.
In the top of the tenth inning, Mullins came up with a man on third base and one out. With the automatic runner, the visiting team’s goal in extra innings is to score two runs.
Mullins took care of that.
Then in the Top of the 10th, another great call from Kevin Brown of Mullins’ game winning home run, capping off one of the best 15 minutes any MLB player has had in quite some time. pic.twitter.com/7xXLyjpIGU

That homer gave Baltimore a 5-3 lead, which ended up as the final score. The home run he robbed, combined with the one he hit, meanwhile, made Mullins the easiest choice Player of the Game that we’ve seen in a long time.
And the baseball world reacted to his game-saving and game-winning performance.

Mullins’ heroics helped Baltimore pull out a series win in Seattle and helped the Orioles finish what’s been a less-than-stellar week in a good way.
