Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper has always been known to be one of the most fiery players in all of baseball. And it turns out, he is equally as fiery off of the field. And MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred felt the full extent of that in a recent visit to the Phillies clubhouse.
We are quickly approaching the end of the MLB collective bargaining agreement, which will come to an end in December of 2026. And recently, it has become a big talking point on the side of MLB owners that a salary cap be implemented in the game to bring some semblance of competitive balance across the board for MLB teams. And, of course, to limit MLB salaries, which would obviously benefit owners.
Last week, Manfred spent over an hour in the Phillies clubhouse, which he has begun to do with every team around the league to “improve his relations with every team’s players”. Unfortunately for Manfred, his relations with Harper in particular ended up being far from improved after the meeting.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Manfred alluded to the possibility of a salary cap being implemented during his time in the Phillies clubhouse. And Bryce Harper made it incredibly clear that he was against the possibility, telling Manfred to “get the f*** out of our clubhouse” if he was going to talk about a salary cap.
Manfred reportedly responded by saying that he was “not going to get the f*** out of here”, which created a further tense standoff between Harper and Manfred.
Speaking about the incident, Phillies star Nick Castellanos described the incident as “pretty intense”. But Castellanos did say that he wasn’t exactly surprised by how his teammate approached the situation.
“It was pretty intense, definitely passionate,” Castellanos told ESPN. “Both of ’em. The commissioner giving it back to Bryce and Bryce giving it back to the commissioner. That’s Harp. He’s been doing this since he was 15 years old. It’s just another day. I wasn’t surprised.”
It’s pretty jarring to hear a player so passionate going after a league commissioner. But given the fact that a salary cap would undoubtedly negatively affect players at the negotiation table in the future, it’s not exactly all that hard to understand why Harper would be so against the possibility.
Either way, Harper and Manfred clearly have some bad blood for one another. So chances are, Harper won’t be all that eager for Manfred’s next planned visit to the Phillies clubhouse in the future…
