The Philadelphia Phillies have suffered a major blow just days before the season begins.
The team announced Thursday night that first baseman Rhys Hoskins has a torn ACL. The 30-year-old slugger suffered the non-contact injury Thursday afternoon while fielding a grounder in a spring training game against the Detroit Tigers.
Hoskins had to be carted off the field, immediately raising fears that the injury might be very serious. The left knee ligament tear will likely require reconstructive surgery and sideline him all of 2023.
Phillies 1B Rhys Hoskins underwent an MRI today that revealed a left knee anterior cruciate ligament tear that will require surgery. The recommended surgery is an ACL reconstruction. Additional details regarding the surgery, including the date and surgeon, are to be determined.

It’s a tough blow for Hoskins and the Phillies. He’s been a dependable power bat for Philadelphia in recent years. Hoskins slashed .246/.332/.462 last season with 30 home runs.
Making things even worse for Hoskins, he is due to become a free agent after this season.
Baseball fans, even those from other teams in the NL East, reacted to the news with sympathy for Hoskins.
We love you, Rhys ❤️ pic.twitter.com/JZPaKgsiMG

There’s a very good chance that Rhys Hoskins’ tenure as a Phillie has come to an end. It really should not have ended this way. I’m heartbroken.
