The Pittsburgh Pirates unveiled some new alternate uniforms Thursday and wheeeew are they beautiful.

The jerseys, which the team will wear for Sunday home games during the season, are modeled after the ones worn by the 1979 “We Are Family” Pirates, who won the World Series behind Willie Stargell and Dave Parker. Rumors of the nostalgic alternates had been rumored for the past month.

The Pirates aren’t honoring any anniversary of the 1979 team or anything (that was 37 years ago); they’re just shouting out one of the best teams in franchise history for the heck of it, which is totally fine with us.

Via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

“The 1979 uniforms have always been widely popular with our fans and we believe this is the right complement to our existing uniform collection,” said team president Frank Coonelly. “Every season we strive for ways to pay tribute to the great teams of our past. This is a unique opportunity for the organization to recognize the 1979 World Series champions.”

The Pirates have reached the playoffs three straight years, losing in the NL Wild Card Game twice and NLDS once. With a promising roster led by Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte and Gerrit Cole, Pittsburgh is in good shape for another postseason bid heading into 2016, and perhaps some World Series throwback uniforms can propel the Pirates to a current-day Fall Classic.
