The Texas Rangers were dealt a huge blow on Friday.

Evan Grant, who covers the team for the Dallas Morning News, reported that right-hander Jake Odorizzi will miss the entire 2023 season after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on his shoulder.

Odorizzi was previously said to be dealing with normal arm fatigue and soreness. The injury was believed to be more severe than that. Rangers general manager Chris Young stated last month that Odorizzi would be out “longer than shorter,” per Jeff Wilson of Rangers Today. The Rangers then placed the veteran starting pitcher on the 60-day injured list prior to the start of the season, signaling that a return would not be imminent, as Friday’s news all but confirmed that.

Despite a down season with the Braves in 2o22, the Rangers acquired Odorizzi as a part of a remodeling of their starting rotation, which included acquiring starters like Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney over the off-season Atlanta agreed to cover $10 million of Odorizzi’s $12.5 million salary as a part of the trade with Koby Allard heading back to the Braves.

Last season, Odorizzi pitched to a 4.40 ERA spending time between the Braves and Houston Astros. He was traded to Atlanta in exchange for veteran reliever Will Smith. At the time of the trade, Odorizzi boasted a 3.75 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 60 innings (12 starts). With the Braves, he pitched to a 5.24 ERA in 46.1 innings (10 starts).

Still, despite those numbers, he figured to be a low-cost reclamation project at the backend of Texas’ rotation as he boasts a 3.99 ERA during an 11-year MLB career.
