For those clamoring to get MLB all-time hit leader Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame, you sort of got your wish today.

Rose hasn’t been introduced into Cooperstown (he’s still banned) but the Cincinnati Reds announced he will be joining the Reds Hall of Fame, and will be introduced during the 2016 Reds HOF Induction Weekend.

“Inducting Pete Rose into the Reds Hall of Fame will be a defining moment in the 147-year history of this storied franchise,” said Bob Castellini via a statement released by the team. “He is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Reds uniform and it will be an unforgettable experience to watching him honored as such.

Rose was banned from baseball in 1989 and has since applied to be reinstated so he could be hall of fame eligible multiple times. Earlier last month, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred rejected Rose’s latest application for reinstatement. He wrote that Rose did not present enough credible evidence to show he honestly accepted his wrongdoing.

“Mr. Rose has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life either by an honest acceptance by him of his wrongdoing, so clearly established by the Dowd Report, or by a rigorous, self-aware and sustained program of avoidance by him of the circumstances that led to his permanent eligibility in 1989. Absent such credible evidence, allowing him to work in the game presents an unacceptable risk of a future violation by him of Rule 21, and thus to the integrity of our sport,” Manfred wrote.

Despite the ban, Manfred said the Reds could celebrate Rose’s career accomplishments as long as they seek his approval beforehand.

Rose will join Johnny Bench, Ken Griffey Jr., Joe Morgan, Cesar Geronimo among the current Reds inductees.

So it may not be Cooperstown, but Rose is finally getting a hall of fame induction – even if it’s just in Cincinnati.
