The early portions of Friday’s game between the Kansas City Royals and the Seattle Mariners couldn’t have gone worse for the Royals. But miraculously, they were able to erase an eight-run deficit, overcoming a 99% chance of losing in the process to come away with the win.
Seattle came out of the gates hot, rocking Royals starting pitcher Daniel Lynch IV for seven runs in the first inning. That lead would later get extended by a ground-rule double in the top of the fourth inning from Ty France.
At the time of the double, the Mariners had a 9% chance of winning the game via Baseball Savant Statcast. But the Royals never quit, chipping away at the lead.
They cut their deficit all the way down to two runs by the time the ninth inning came around. Facing off against Ryne Stanek, they were able to get the first two batters of the innings on base, ultimately cutting the lead to one on an RBI groundout from Maikel Garcia.
Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. then ripped an RBI triple, scoring Garrett Hampson to tie the game.

With only one out and the winning runner on third, the Mariners opted to intentionally walk the next two batters to attempt to set up a double play opportunity to get out of the jam and force extra innings.
But Nelson Velazquez had other plans, hitting a hard ground ball to J.P. Crawford that he was miraculously able to glove. However, he took a moment to flip the ball to the second baseman from his knees, which allowed Velasquez to reach first base safely to give the Royals a 10-9 victory.

This win builds a ton of momentum for a Royals team that needs this kind of boost as of late. Following a hot start to the season, the Royals have fallen behind the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central as of late, losing 6 out of their last 10 games.
