With the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline just days away, more moves have been made as we barrel toward July 30th.
The New York Mets acquired reliever Ryne Stanek Friday. Stanek comes from the Seattle Mariners, who have been on the end of some already-meaningful moves.
Stanek, 33, comes out of the bullpen, boasting a 4.38 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 39 innings this season. Earning a 2022 World Series ring, he’s used to high-leverage situations, making him an alluring add for the Mets who are atop the National League Wild-Card standings (55-48).
The respectable strikeout-to-walk ratio (25.6 percent to 9.9 percent), along with a 92 percent chase rate, could have caught the eyes of the team.

In exchange for Stanek, the Mariners received minor-league outfielder Rhylan Thomas. The Mets also designated left-handed pitcher Josh Walker for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
Stanek adds depth to an already prominent bullpen that possesses the names of José Buttó and Dedniel Núñez. Phil Maton was also brought over from the Tampa Bay Rays in a trade two weeks ago.
While this might seem the Mets are going for it this season, the same could be said of the Mariners.
Seattle acquired former AL Rookie of the Year and 2023 All-Star outfielder Randy Arozarena from the Rays on Friday. That will surely boost their lineup after shortstop J.P. Crawford is expected to miss four to six weeks with a broken hand. All-Star centerfielder Julio Rodríguez will also miss some time dealing with a high ankle sprain.
