After not pitching one inning in the majors since 2020 due to shoulder and hip issues, former All-Star closer Trevor Rosenthal has signed with the San Francisco Giants on a one-year deal worth $4.5 million, according to NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Alex Pavlovic.

As a part of Rosenthal’s new deal, he will have a number of lucrative performance bonuses that he can reach, including $1 million if he reaches a certain number of games played and finishes.
Rosenthal, who was an All-Star in 2015 with the St. Louis Cardinals, is currently rehabbing in Arizona and has been placed on the injured list. He signed a one-year $11 million deal with the Oakland Athletics before the 2021 season, but never pitched in any games due to surgery he had for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in April that year. He underwent another surgery last July for a torn right hip labrum.
Rosenthal was once considered one of the best relievers in the big leagues but has been hampered by injuries. From 2012 to 2017, he appeared in 328 games with a 2.99 ERA, 31.2% strikeout rate, and 10.3% walk rate. He racked up 121 saves and 46 holds.
The move comes at a crucial time for the Giants, who have had problems with their bullpen this season and just released Jake McGee before the All-Star break. As things currently stand, the Giants are firmly in the hunt in the NL Wild Card race, sitting a half-game back from the Philadephia Phillies who hold the third and final spot.
