One day after the New York Yankees ruffled the feathers of Detroit Tigers fans, the Tigers social media team was in a trolling mood.

In the eighth inning of Thursday’s game between the Yankees and Tigers, Miguel Cabrera strolled to the plate with two runners on. New York manager Aaron Boone decided to walk him. Given that Cabrera had 2,999 career hits, it was not a popular move. Boone was booed by the Detroit fans and criticized by Tigers announcer, Dan Dickerson. Cabrera’s next chance was supposed to come on Friday against the Colorado Rockies, but that game got rained out.

When that news broke, the person running Detroit’s Twitter account took a jab at the Yankees that, while playful, lacked any subtlety.

Baseball fans appreciated the solid troll job.

While the rainout is a bummer — particularly for those who were going to Friday’s game — Detroit’s fans shouldn’t have to wait much longer for Cabrera’s big moment. Friday’s game will be made up in a double-header on Saturday and the Tigers and Rockies will finish the three-game series on Sunday. There is a small sense of urgency, though, as after Sunday, Detroit will go on a six-game road trip. So, if he’s going to get hit No. 3,000 at home, it likely has to be against Colorado.

With his next hit, Cabrera will join two of MLB’s most exclusive clubs. Cabrera will be the 33rd player in MLB history to record 3,000 hits. In 2021, Cabrera joined the 500 home run club. When he gets his 3,000th hit, Cabrera will be only seven players to be a part of both groups, joining Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Rafael Palmeiro, Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez.
