Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story continued his historic start to the MLB season, as he homered for the seventh time in just his sixth career game on Sunday at Coors Field.

Story set the Major League Record for home runs in a team’s first six games of the season, after taking Brandon Maurer deep in the eighth inning in today’s 6-3 Rockies victory over the San Diego Padres.

With the home run, Story passed Willie Mays, Mike Schmidt, and Larry Walker in most home runs in the first six games of the season setting an MLB record, as ESPN notes. That’s elite company and nothing to scoff at. To put his streak into perspective, he’s already out-homered more than 78% players in MLB history, per High Heat Stats.

He’s also hit more home runs than 16 teams per ESPN Stats & Info.

Story is making fans forget about former longtime shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, and the suspended Jose Reyes. The 23-year-old didn’t enter the season as a noted power hitter, maxing out at 20 home runs as his top mark in the minors, but he’s looked like the league’s most fearsome hitter through six games for Colorado.

Is it sustainable? Probably not. Story has been swinging for the fences with one walk and eight strikeouts in 28 plate appearances.

Still, his streak has been exhilarating and has been a needed turnaround at the shortstop position considering all the issues with Reyes. The Rockies needed a good story (pun intended) and Story has delivered.
