Things got testy recently between the Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox. Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli told Red Sox star Willson Contreras, “Sit down, boy!” after striking him out.
Cavalli took ownership of his mistake afterward, noting the “loaded” history surrounding the word, which Southerners once used to demean Black Americans. Cavalli told reporters that he “learned a lot” about that history between the world and people of color and assured that it would “never happen again.”
“I’m extremely torn up about the way that things were perceived,” Cavalli said. “Obviously, there was no ill intention behind that. It hurt my heart, knowing that, if there’s a 13-year-old black kid in D.C. that sees that — that looked up to me and thinks that he perceived it in a way that wasn’t intended the way that it came out, and then he’s not looking up to me anymore. That hurts my heart.”
“There’s a history behind that word, and that’s just something that as a competitor, like in football or basketball, playing Wiffle ball with my brother, you don’t understand it,” he added. “And then it gets perceived in a way that was not my intention, and then you learn from that. It’ll never happen again.”
Both Contreras and Cavalli were suspended for the incident. Cavalli had his suspension reduced from seven games to five, while Contreras is still awaiting his final verdict, leaving him eligible in the meantime.
That eligibility meant that he was available for Monday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox, and one White Sox fan was well aware of the situation surrounding Contreras entering the series.
“Sit down, girl!” the fan shouted at him, among other things, via Jomboy Media.
“Swing, girl!” he also shouted.

Hopefully, the fan is aware of the situation between Contreras and Cavalli but not the full context of the word. Otherwise, it’s on him to represent his favorite team, which has been one of the best stories in the MLB this season, in a better light.
