Inter-city rivalries are nothing new, across all sports. Whether in New York, Chicago or the Bay Area, the rivalries tend to run deep.

Chicago White Sox fans have seen their team win a championship somewhat recently (2005), so you would expect they’d maybe have a little sympathy for their crosstown rivals the Cubs, as the North-Siders try to break their 108-year World Series drought.

Well, not quite. Although the White Sox themselves have publicly congratulated the Cubs on their run to the Fall Classic, many White Sox fans are buying up Cleveland Indians gear as they root against the crosstown team.

White Sox fan Dale Mitchell spoke to Fox 32 in Chicago and he had one short, eloquent thought about the Cubs.

“I cannot stand the Cubs.”

Well, alright then. He does go on to clarify his statements a bit even letting it be known he isn’t a fan of the Indians either.

“Even though in a diehard Sox fan and I hate Cleveland, I just hate the Cubs more.”

It isn’t just Mitchell who hates the Cubs and is willing to cheer on their rival Indians. According to Grandstands co-owner Josh Ganal, “Anything that we had that was Cleveland is pretty much wiped out. Maybe with the exception of two hats.”

That’s taking hatred to a completely different level. Apparently the enemy of your enemy is indeed your friend. At least that is the case with people from the south side of Chicago.
