New York Yankees top outfield prospect Spencer Jones has dominated in 2025 in a way that makes him one of the most attractive prospects in recent memory for the Yankees organization. But seemingly, this has made it so the Yankees perhaps value him far more than he is actually worth.
Since being called up to Triple-A, Jones has been on an absolute tear, hitting for a .402 batting average with 13 home runs in just 21 games played. It’s fair to question whether Jones may truly be one of the best pure power prospects in all of baseball at the moment.
However, Jones still hasn’t proven a thing at the MLB level yet. And the Yankees are seemingly only considering a generational talent back in return for Jones if they were to trade their young prospect.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees will only trade Jones if it were in a package to the Pittsburgh Pirates for superstar pitcher Paul Skenes, who understandably has not been made available by the Pirates.
Teams with good/great pieces consistently ask the Yankees about top OF prospect Spencer Jones . The Yankees are consistent on this too: They will only trade Jones (and others in package) for Paul Skenes, who’s not available and not going anywhere.

This essentially means that Jones will be staying in New York unless the Pirates have a change of heart at the last minute before the deadline, which seems incredibly unlikely.
Naturally, baseball fans took notice of this report from Heyman and couldn’t believe how irrationally confident the Yankees are in Jones.
Jones isn’t even a top 100 prospect, and they’re acting like he’s Aaron Judge https://t.co/pMVYC1Dej6

Spencer Jones, who has yet to make his MLB debut and has struck out 296 times in his last 744 at-bats (39.8%) in the minors, is 380 days older than Paul Skenes https://t.co/m2YlRdyyx2

not cashing in on a bad prospect that’s on a crazy hot streak and therefore has solid value is hilarious https://t.co/NSPywStQjI

Right, because the Pirates would rush to trade a generational starting pitcher for a non-top 100 prospect with a 31.5% career strikeout rate. https://t.co/bbUPlet22s

Jones may very well go on to have an excellent MLB career some day. But on paper, the fact that the Yankees are only considering someone like Skenes, who is perhaps the best pitcher in baseball at just 23 years of age, back in a trade for Jones just shows how delusional high they think of Jones.
