The New York Yankees basically lost before they even had a chance to bat on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.

The Minnesota Twins scored nine runs in the top of the first inning and took an 11-0 lead in the third. Minnesota won by a final score of 11-2.

Just how rough was the first inning for the Yankees?

As ESPN Stats & Info tweets, this is the 121 season in franchise history, and the nine runs are tied for the most the Yankees have ever allowed in the first inning.

It was a particularly rough night for Yankees starting pitcher Jhony Brito. The right-hander allowed seven earned runs while getting just two outs. Colten Brewer followed out of the bullpen, allowing four earned runs and three home runs over 3 1/3 innings pitched.

The first inning featured back-to-back-to-back home runs for the Twins.

Twitter user Frankie G even gave the nine-run inning the Benny Hill music treatment.

The game had an over/under of 8.5 runs, which cashed in the top of the first inning.

Former big-league pitcher Dan Plesac of MLB Network tweeted, “Baseball hard to explain at times … the Yankees Jhony Brito had 2 very good starts (vs SF and O’s) .. tonight wasn’t his night (IP 2/3 H6 ER7 BB1) … young pitcher will learn from this, stuff is good, location and bad count leverage cost him tonight. Twins were ready 2 hit.”

Minnesota improves to an AL Central-best 9-4 with the victory.

At 8-5, the Yankees are five games beyond the unbeaten Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.
