The Frankie Montas era in The Bronx has gone auspiciously. The New York Yankees acquired Montas in a trade deadline deal that aimed to bolster the Yankee rotation. Unfortunately, what Montas provided with New York hasn’t been super productive. Wednesday brought unfortunate, horrible news for both Montas and the club.

Montas will miss part of the 2023 MLB season after the team learned he would require shoulder surgery. ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reported the news on Twitter.

“Right-hander Frankie Montas, the biggest acquisition for the New York Yankees at the trade deadline last year who was expected to be a big part of their rotation this year, will undergo shoulder surgery on Tuesday that could cause him to miss the season, manager Aaron Boone said,” Passan tweeted.

Boone also added that Montas’ surgery will take place on February 21. New York Post writer Joel Sherman tweeted that information, relayed from manager Aaron Boone, on Wednesday.

In 2022, Montas went 1-3 and posted a 6.35 ERA in 39.2 innings with the Yankees. In the postseason, he pitched in Game 1 of the 2022 ALCS against the Houston Astros. He tossed just one inning and allowed a home run to ALCS MVP Jeremy Peña.

The Yankees did sign Carlos Rodón to a long-term deal this off-season, so they may not be hit as hard. But losing an arm in the rotation for a significant time is never a good thing.

The MLB world reacted to the news, and not much of it was pleasant.
