It appears that the steam surrounding MMA fighter Conor McGregor crossing over into the boxing world might have been real.

FOX Sports reported Thursday that McGregor has received his boxing license in California. This would allow McGregor to start boxing in bigtime matches in the Sunshine State. It also helps open the door to a potential fight against Floyd Mayweather.

While making his way to the top of the UFC, McGregor seems to always be exploring other options. He has ripped wrestling outlets like the WWE, but he has still come out and said he’d consider joining another organization like the WWE. All of this would be dependent on Dana White and company allowing McGregor to fight outside of the UFC octagon.

With boxing, this seems to just be the beginning. McGregor is expected to apply for boxing licenses in other states that host prominent events, such as New York, Nevada and Texas.

Though we have absolutely no idea if/when McGregor would be in the boxing ring, there continues to be speculation regarding a fight between McGregor and Mayweather. According to FOX Sports…

McGregor has offered to fight Mayweather several times while demanding at least $100 million from the former pound-for-pound champion to meet in the ring under boxing rules.

The timing of this news is definitely interesting. Just three days ago, UFC announced it had stripped away one of McGregor’s championship belts.

Until we get more information, it’s hard to know exactly what McGregor’s motives are here. But it surely adds some intrigue and can excite those pining for a Mayweather-McGregor showdown in the boxing ring.
