Unlike the days of Babe Ruth, where a diet of beer and hot dogs could work for an athlete in peak physical condition, today’s athletes usually have to sacrifice all the tasty food us fans can enjoy. In retirement, some athletes keep up with their eating habits because they have done it so long, while others let go and eat whatever they want.

Newly retired Maverick Dirk Nowitzki went with the latter option, and is loving every minute of it. After retiring last month, Nowitzki has spent his free time on the finer things in life, including hanging out with his kids, working on his charity, and eating ice cream.

On 105.3 The Fan’s Ben and Skin show, Nowitzki said, “I’ve had ice cream almost every day, I’ve tried some suits on and they don’t fit. I’m probably about 15 [pounds] plus.”

Dirk really is living the dream.

While he’s cut back on being in the gym, Nowitzki has been somewhat active. Nowitzki took a rather terrible penalty at a FC Dallas game and attempted a bicycle kick in a charity game in Germany in a way that I probably couldn’t have done much better.

The goal for anyone in retirement is to keep busy and enjoy your retirement. In just a month, it seems like Dirk Nowitzki has adapted well to retirement.
