While the Golden State Warriors are tied 2-2 with the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals and regained home-court advantage in Friday’s Game 4 victory, the struggles of Draymond Green continued. During the game, he was criticized by someone he knows quite well — his mother.

While Draymond was better in Game 4 than he was in Game 3, he wasn’t good. This was particularly true on offense, where Green often seemed to be playing hot potato with the ball, getting rid of it as soon as he could, even at times where it made little sense. Late in the game, his mom, Mary Babers-Green, made it known that Draymond’s struggles are as much a mystery to her as they are to everyone else.

Sometimes the toughest critics are not former players, but moms.

This isn’t exactly unprecedented for Green. We’re sure his mom has been vocal in private with him a lot throughout his life. But some of those criticisms have gone public. For instance, in 2019, the Warriors and Houston Rockets were in a series. Golden State won a tight Game 1 that featured a lot of arguing between Green and the officials. After the first game, she told him to not worry about the refs (per Marc J. Spears) He responded with a 15 point, 12 rebound and seven assist effort in a Game 2 win.

And there’s good news for the Warriors and their fans. One, while he struggled on offense in Game 4, Draymond was solid elsewhere with nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Furthermore, the series is tied. So, while his individual game hasn’t been great, his team has done well enough to stay in the series. If Draymond can find one more good game, he could still be integral in an NBA Finals victory for his team.
